Dr Glen Gillis, Professor of Saxophone, University of Saskatchewan

Glen Gillis is Professor of Saxophone, Conducting, and Music Education at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Gillis is a Conn-Selmer Artist/Clinician and continues to maintain an active schedule in saxophone performance. Having performed at numerous NASA Biennial/Regional Conferences and World Saxophone Congresses, he has also provided many saxophone clinics including The Midwest Clinic in Chicago. In June 2011 he will tour China and perform at five-city/university venues that include Beijing, Tianjin, Xi'an, Kunming, and Shanghai. Recently he released SaxSpectrum © 2009 on MSR Classics label (MS1328) performing and displaying many of his compositions and commissioned works, all world premiere recordings. Recently international music magazines such as American Music Guide, BBC Music Magazine, and Gramophone gave stellar reviews of his CD. He also can be found on Hoot/Wisdom Records on didgeridoo.diversions. © 2007. He has several published compositions for saxophone, and for band (Eighth Note Publications - distributed by Alfred Music). Dr. Gillis earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Saskatchewan, a Masters from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia.


Elegy Cadenza - Glen Gillis

Elegy Cadenza (2009), dedicated to the memory of the composer/performer's father is the development of a 3-note descending motif. The opening cadenza-like section, depicted by a wide range of emotions, segues to the elegy in the Phrygian mode, that progresses to a fast Dorian mode finale.

Algid Sketches - Glen Gillis

Algid Sketches (2012) for alto saxophone is a programmatic work depicting an individual experiencing the Northern Canadian seasons and its elements through lyrical lines and an array of saxophone effects.
